Number 4: The Longues-sur-Mer Artillery Battery

Longues sur Mer

One of the most fascinating and evocative locations along the 50 miles of the D-Day beachhead, the German Naval artillery battery at Longues-sur-Mer is Normandy’s best-preserved strongpoint. Four 150mm guns, still in their bunkers, mortar pits, ammunition stores, and the fire control bunker at the edge of the 200-foot cliffs are all open to the public. With support from the Allied navies, and intelligence from the French Resistance, the British Devonshire Regiment secured this position on D+1, June 7th 1944. You’ll see how a lucky shot destroyed gun number 4 and get a sense of just how unique this place is when you stand next to military hardware that was last fired 77 years ago.
