Number 3: Gold Beach and the British Normandy Memorial

British Normandy Memorial

British troops of the 50th Infantry Division, supported by No.47 Commando, came ashore here at 7:25am on D-Day. You can follow in the footsteps of D-Day’s only Victoria Cross recipient – Sergeant Stanley Hollis – from the trolley car stop on Gold Beach to the German gun emplacements known as the Mont Fleury Battery. Some of the bunkers have been incorporated into private residences, but others are open to the public. At the top of the hill is the new British Normandy Memorial where the names of 22,442 service personnel killed during the Battle of Normandy are carved on 160 huge stone columns. The fabulous neoclassical structure, constructed at a cost of £30 million, is located on the ridge of the hill overlooking Gold Beach. The Mulberry Harbour at Arromanches is visible a few miles to the west.
