Number 2: Sainte-Mère-Eglise

Sainte Mere Eglise

The first town liberated in the US Sector was secured by troops of the 82nd and 101st airborne divisions on the morning of D-Day. Hollywood brought fame to Sainte-Mère-Eglise, and the town attracts millions of visitors eager to see the mannequin of Private John Steele swinging on his chute lines from the church bell tower. Inside the church are two beautiful stained-glass windows commemorating the bravery of the American liberators. Opposite, the old wrought-iron fence still bears the scars received during the firefight between the airborne infantry and the German defenders. Several monuments, including the Signal Monument, can be seen during a short stroll around this picturesque Normandy town. The fabulous Airborne museum contains some impressive exhibits like the C47 transport plane and the WACO glider among many others. Cafés and restaurants attract tourists and local people alike – so it’s a great place for a quick lunch.
