Number 9: Port Winston in Arromanches-les-Bains

Arromanches-les-Bains

A must-visit if you’re interested in military engineering is the artificial Mulberry B harbour in Arromanches near Gold Beach. ‘Port Winston’ as the harbour became known after D-Day brought in over 2.5 million men, half a million vehicles, and four million tons of supplies. 600,000 tons of concrete were floated across the English Channel behind the invasion fleet to construct the 10 miles of floating causeways. The Phoenix caissons that formed the harbour wall can still be seen today – and visited at low tide. The D-Day Museum in Arromanches is worth a visit, as is the 360-degree cinema on the cliffs overlooking the harbour.
