Number 7: Bayeux and the British & Commonwealth Cemetery

Bayeux Cemetery

Bayeux’s cobbled streets, restaurants, boutiques and medieval attractions like the cathedral and the Bayeux Tapestry make it the ideal place to stay when touring Normandy. As well as its historical charms, the town also has a key role in the D-Day story. Liberated on D+1 by the British 50th Infantry Division, it has many monuments and relics of the invasion. An easy stroll around the town takes you past the monuments to Generals Eisenhower and de Gaulle, the 50th ‘Northumbrian’ Division, the 56th Infantry Brigade, and the iconic war photographer Robert Capa. A huge memorial to the citizens of Bayeux deported to Nazi concentration camps is carved in stone in front of the town hall, and a stained-glass window in the cathedral commemorates the Allies’ sacrifices during the liberation of France. There’s the excellent Battle of Normandy Museum and the British and Commonwealth cemetery where 4,648 servicemen from 11 nations are laid to rest.
